LEKMA HOLDS A ONE-DAY STAKEHOLDERS WORKSHOP ON STREET NAMING AND PROPERTY NUMBERING PROJECT

In line with President John Dramani Mahama’s directive that all MMDA’s should number houses and properties and also name all streets within their jurisdiction, LEKMA held a one-day stakeholder workshop for that purpose on Thursday, 30th January, 2014 at the GNAT Hall in Teshie.
Participants were drawn from all stakeholders within the Municipality including the staff of LEKMA, Teshie and Nungua Traditional Council representatives, Assembly Members of LEKMA, transport and driver union operators in LEKMA among others.

A presentation on guidelines developed by the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development was made. This presentation was to serve as guide for LEKMA to put in place a nationally coherent Street Naming and Property Addressing System.

A resource person from the Town and Country Planning Department Head Office also led participants through steps involved in the excise as well as the budget involved. Participants were reminded that as per the directive of the President, no name of a living person will be used for any street. Alternatively residents could choose to use names of trees, flowers, fruits where there is difficulty in using names of the dead who helped their community. He also gave some of the benefits of the exercise which include database of all property that will be generated for easy identification of persons owing the Assembly revenue.

Madam Jean Arthur-Williams, the Municipal Town Planning Officer briefed participants on the status and plans for the exercise in the Municipality.

The Municipal Chief Executive of LEKMA, Honourable Seth Badu Tawiah appealed to all stakeholders to take the exercise serious and support the cause since it has a lot of benefit to citizens in the Municipality. He asked the Traditional Councils to submit the names they wished to be used for their streets on time to help the Assembly meet the national deadline.

Madam Moira Nancy Ewa, the Municipal Coordinating Director reiterated why all hands must be on deck for the success of this national assignment.

The Chairman for the occasion, Mr. Samuel Ashidam also added that the exercise is a laudable idea which will help ease the burden of giving directions to people who are new to the Municipality.
