BRIEF STATEMENT DELIVERED BY HON. MRS. EVELYN NAA ADJELEY TWUM-GYAMRAH, THE MUNICIPAL CHIEF EXECUTIVE OF THE LEDZOKUKU MUNICIPAL ASSEMBLY ON THE OCCASION OF THE DISBURSEMENT OF THE DISABILITY FUND HELD ON TUESDAY, 24TH JULY 2018 AT THE ASSEMBLY’S CAR PARK

  1. CHAIRMAN,

OFFICIALS FROM THE NATIONAL COUNCIL FOR PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES,

HEADS OF DEPARTMENT,

FRIENDS FROM THE MEDIA,

INVITED GUESTS

I am greatly honoured today to welcome you to this august occasion. I would like to give thanks to the Almighty God who out of his abundant grace has granted us our lives to disburse funds and other items to our brothers and sisters who are living with disabilities.

Nevertheless, let me extend my sincere greetings to all of you gathered here for the purpose of this disbursement of funds, particularly to those who have worked selflessly to ensure the success of the disbursement over the years, that is the Disability Fund Management Committee.

The Government of Ghana aims to minimize poverty among all PWDs particularly those outside the formal sector of employment and also enhance their social image through dignified labour.

Ladies and Gentlemen, we are all aware that this disbursement is to support income generating activities of individual persons with disabilities as a means of economic empowerment.

Secondly, to provide educational support for children, students and trainees with various forms of disabilities.

Thirdly, to build capacity of PWDs in the Municipality to enable them advocate and assert their rights and undertake awareness raising and sensitization on disability issues.

And finally, to ensure that persons with disabilities have access to technical aids and other assistive devices and equipment.

Ladies and Gentlemen, you will agree with me that since the inception of the disbursement of funds to PWDs our streets are for now spared from the alms begging nuisance by some PWDs if not completely eliminated. This is because they have been resourced to generate their own income to support themselves and their families.

I am particularly glad that individual PWDs are permitted to access the fund without having to belong to an organisation for People living With Disability. I wish to state that the focus of the fund is not just for PWDs who belonged to associations but to all who fall within the category of people for which the funds were allocated for.

Distinguished Guest, Ladies and Gentlemen, the total number of persons who are going to receive equipment or cash today are one hundred and six (106). The total amount of money to be disbursed to them stands at Sixty-Seven Thousand, Five Hundred Ghana Cedis (GH₵67,500.00) while the total cost of the equipment to be disbursed is One Hundred and Forty Thousand, Eight Hundred and Thirty-Eight Ghana Cedis, Thirty Pesewas (GH₵140,838.30). The items to be distributed are:

  • Industrial Sewing Machines,
  • Water Storage Tanks
  • Deep Freezers,
  • Laptop computer
  • Desktop computer,
  • Spraying machine,
  • Tomato grinding machine,
  • Fabricated metal containers

Please bear with us that the metal containers are still under fabrication and the beneficiaries would be called for pick up when fabrication is completed.

We would be grateful if the funds as well as the equipment disbursed to our brothers and sisters would be put to good use and also to improve their livelihood.

The Ledzokuku Municipal Assembly will continue to provide its maximum support to make sure the funds are given to the right people and for the right purpose.

On this note, I wish to entreat each and everyone gathered here to contribute their quota towards the development of the Municipality.

Thank you and God bless us all.

LeKMA ISD
