SPEECH DELIVERED BY Hon.NII ARMAH ASHITEY, GREATER ACCRA REGIONAL MINISTER AT THE GREATER ACCRA REGIONAL DAY (WEDNESDAY 24TH NOV. 2010) DURING THE NATIONAL FESTIVAL OF ARTS AND CULTURE HELD AT TAMALE FROM 20TH – 27TH NOVEMBER, 2010.

DISTINGUISHED LADIES AND GENTLEMEN
I am delighted to be here today on this important occasion and indeed happy as the Greater Accra Regional Minister to welcome you to the Regional Day for the Greater Accra Region which for part of the events for this year’s National Festival of Arts and Culture.
My information in the Theme for the Festival is that
NAFAC-Promoting Unity Technology and wealth Creation for a Better Ghana; The Role of the youth in National Building”.
I wish to convey, on behalf of the Greater Accra Regional Co-ordinating Council, the chiefs and people of the Greater Accra Region, my warmest wishes to you all and to welcome you to our Regional Day. My special warm welcome goes to those of you coming from afar to participate in our Regional Day. I hope you are well refreshed to participate full and actively in the Festival particularly on this colorful day when the people of greater Accra Region and western have assembly here to showcase our culture potential.
Ladies and Gentlemen, this year marks another milestone in the history of the National Festival of Arts and Culture (NAFAC) which is a biennial event where people from different walks of life and with different cultural heritage assembly to engage in a healthy and happy competition with the view to showcasing their traditional peculiarities and economic endowments through local technological inventions to boost job creation and explore investment opportunities among others.
Let us use this festival to strengthen the bond of friendship, belongings understanding and mutual respect among our people. Again by the reactionary nature of the festival, people from different region have the opportunity to appreciate these thus making them conscious of the fact that we are one people with a common destiny.
Ladies and Gentlemen, NAFAC continues to play a major role in the unearthing, nurturing and developing of talent Artists, performers and exhibitors to stardom as has been in past.
Again Arts in its different forms have now become big business and people who have the talent and skills especially our youth should be encouraged to develop them.
Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen you all know, Greater Accra Region is the smallest of the 10 administrative regions in terms of land area, occupying a total land surface of 3,245 square kilometers or 1.4 per cent of the total land area of Ghana. The Region, as at the last population census in 2000 has a total population of almost 3 million, a second most populated Region after the Ashanti Region. The Region has 10 Districts namely Accra Metropolitan Assembly, Tema Metropolitan Assembly, Ga West Municipal Assembly (Amasaman),Ga East Municipal Assembly (Abokobi),Ga South Municipal Assembly (Weija), Adenta Municipal Assembly (Adenta), Ashaiman Municipal Assembly (Ashaiman), Ledzokuku – Krowor Municipal Assembly (Teshie – Nungua), Dangme West District Assembly ( Dodowa), and lastly Dangme East District Assembly (Ada).
