ADDRESS BY DEPUTY MINISTRE OF ROADS AND HIGHWAYS,HON.NII OAKLEY QUAYE-KUMAH ON THE OCCASION OF 26TH EDITION OF FARMERS DAY CELEBRATION HELD BY LEDZOKUKU-KROWOR MUNICIPAL ASSEMBLY AT THE NUNGUA TRADITION AUTHORITY 3RD DECEMBER,2010
Chiefs, Queen-mothers and Elders
The Hon. Chief Executive,
Colleague members and Fishermen,
Friends and the Media,
Ladies and Gentlemen:
I feel highly honored to be invited to this year’s farmer’s day celebration of the Ledzokuku -krowor Municipal Assembly and furthermore be given the opportunity to voice out these few words on this special occasion.
I say this because it is prestigious to be associated with farmers and fishermen because it is through their toil that the country has come this far in its development agenda – Congratulation ayekoo.
There could not have been any better theme for this year’s celebrations other than the one GROW MOER FOOD, The World Food Day which was celebrated in October also has a theme United Against Hunger, Both themes though calve in different words, have the same objective to increase food yield.
This places an enormous task on farmers and fishermen to produce enough to reach all people.I have no doubt that we can meet the challenge taking into cognizance the prudent policies and good implementation plan outlined by the NDC Government. The ultimate solution is not too far.
The Government in its recognition of the immense contribution of farmers and fishermen has put in place programmes, interventions and opportunities to sustain the trade and improve the living standards of farmers and fishermen.
I will edge you all to take advantage of these opportunities which are readily available at your door steps to improve yourself and the community.
Be informed that most of these facilities are easier to access through organized groups and associations. I will encourage all fishermen and farmers to belong to an association to enable you to be abreast with new development in your occupation. Take interest in the running of your association in order to help sustain the association and achieve the best of benefit from it.
I want to encourage you to also explore the new technological methods in your occupation. These can be accessed through the available institutions like the Extension Services Division and the Department of fisheries all under the Ministry of Agriculture to upgrade your skills and capacity to improve your yield. It will also expose you to the internationally on the environments accepted methods in your trade. This will impact positively on the environment; increase your yield and creat moer wealth.
In appreciating farmers and fishermen, I wish to emphasize that it is only one proud of occupation that their product (yield) is patronized by every member of the population. Every household eats; whatever the nature of food, farmers and fishermen cannot be ruled out in its production.
It is in recognition of this enormous contribution that a day has been set aside to appreciate, encourage and congratulate you for your effort toward the nation building.
I wish to congratulate the award winners; it is my hope that whatever contribution that earned them the awards should be shared among their colleagues to broaden their experiences in the field. I also want to encourage the other colleague to learn from the award winners and work harder to achieve a similar feat in future.
It will be my joy to see the youth actively participating in this prestigious trade alongside their formal education. This will only happen if the practitioners and for that matter the elders become role models and impact positively on the youth, the community and the country as a whole. This is a challenge I throw to you. I want to see moer of our youth appreciating this occupation and taking it up a lot of hope for their future.
I once moer congratulate all for this day. The organizers and the participants, I say to you Ayekoo!!!! W e is all winners.
Once again, thanks you for the honor done me and May God Bless us all.
