WORLD AIDS DAY LAUNCHED

WORLD AIDS DAY LAUNCHED
The 2015 World AIDS Day has been launched at the Presbyterian Salem Park in the Ledzokuku – Krowor Municipal Assembly (LEKMA) on Tuesday November 3rd, 2015 under the theme “Fast Track: Meeting the Health Needs of Children Towards an HIV/AIDS Free Generation”.
Hon. Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo- the Greater Accra Regional Minister, was introduced by the Municipal Coordinating Director of LEKMA- Mrs. Moira Nancy Ewa as the guest of honour for the occasion. According to Hon. Afotey Agbo, the launch is a prelude to the celebration of the 2015 World AIDS Day on the 1st of December in the Brong Ahafo Region. He said the theme emphasises the need to eradicate the disease by preventing infection in children. He hoped that the launch will pave the way for all to provide the support for AIDS prevention and treatment. Hon. Afotey Agbo said he believes with hard work and support from partner agencies, Ghana can attain HIV/AIDS free status.
The Municipal Chief Executive of LEKMA – Hon. Seth Badu Tawiah in his welcome address expressed his heartfelt gratitude to all stakeholders and more importantly, the Ghana AIDS Commission for selecting his municipality for the launch. He mentioned that the theme for the commemoration of the disease confirms the national effort geared at reducing new HIV infections especially through maternal healthcare which is in line with the recently adopted Sustainable Development Goals.
The Director-General of the Ghana AIDS Commission – Dr. Angela El Adas, in her speech said the World AIDS Day was set aside to rekindle the awareness of the disease and also to assess our commitment towards HIV/AIDS. Touching on the theme, she said it was chosen as a result of the fact that reduction of child infection has been one of the successes of the country and this was made possible through the efforts of partners such as the Ghana Health Service, Ghana’s HIV/AIDS Ambassadors among others. She added that whereas the Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice and other human rights enforcers are playing a key role to reduce stigma, the Heart to Heart ambassadors also help infected people to live positively.
There were solidarity messages from stakeholders and partners present. Dr. Steven Ayisi Addo, the Programme Manager at the Ghana AIDS Commission disclosed that compared to other countries, taking an HIV test in Ghana was not frightening due to the fact that the likelihood of one testing positive was very low. According to Dr. Addo, out of a 100 people tested, less than 2 people will be positive in Ghana. He reminded all present that Ebola will come and go but AIDS remains with us because we still have no cure for it hence the need to account for every child in the process of preventing mother to child transmission.
The Heart to Heart ambassadors also came out boldly to assure the public that getting infected with the disease was not a death sentence.
There were free medical screening services on cervical cancer, breast cancer, HIV/AIDS testing and counseling, malaria test, condom demonstration. Participants were given free dewormers from Dan Adams Pharmaceutical Company Ltd. Educational materials and condoms were also distributed to all participants.
The Chairman, Hon. Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo, in his closing remarks entreated all to keep up the good work so that the disease can be eliminated.
Dignitaries who graced the occasion include the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, the Executive Director of National Population Commission, UNAIDS Country Director, PEPFAR Representative, The President of NAP+, Heads of Regional and Municipal Security Agencies, Traditional Authorities from Teshie and Nungua, Assembly Members and staff of LEKMA, students and other organised groups in the municipality and region as a whole.
